Title: Emerging Future Perfect constructions in Contemporary Hebrew
New constructions that employ past tense morphology to refer to future events are now emerging in Hebrew. In my talk I will present a variety of such constructions and show that they all maintain the semantic relation (E-R) & (S-R), which is the coded meaning of the Future Perfect (Comrie 1985: 127). Additionally, I will argue that the above constructions denote resultativity and completivity – two meanings that often characterize newly-grammaticalized Perfects (Lindstedt 2000).
The emergence of a pa’al-based Future Perfect poses a challenge to the unidirectional grammaticalization path which argues that tense markers can never evolve into aspect markers (Bybee et al. 1994, Hengeveld 2011). I will propose an alternative grammaticalization path that can accommodate cases such as Hebrew’s Future Perfect construction now emerging in Hebrew.
