A message from Ophira Gamliel:

Dear Colleagues,

I am happy to announce that we are going to have here at the University of Glasgow an intensive, hard-core grammar-oriented Malayalam summer school for advanced students and researchers interested in Malayalam as a second language for research. Though the course is for beginners, it is meant also for students with some preliminary knowledge of Malayalam, but with lacking or sketchy understanding of Malayalam grammar and philology. The students will be required to learn the script beforehand, so we are not going to begin from scratch. However, no prior knowledge of Malayalam vocabulary or morphology is required.

I have already shared our preliminary plans with some of you in Paris at the EASAS conference earlier this year. We are currently working on finalizing the programme and spreading the word. Kindly let me know whether any of your students or colleagues might be interested in joining us.

This summer school is complementary to the Malayalam courses currently available in a handful of institutions around the world, rather than offering an alternative or a substitute. We aim at providing the linguistic analytical toolkit that will enable students and researchers to pursue Malayalam study in the field or in the philologist’s cave, so to speak. To do so, I have authored a textbook for a comprehensive study of Malayalam grammar (to be published in 2019, hopefully in time for the course), that some of you have already encountered in its draft form in Jerusalem and Tübingen. I attach the introduction of the book for your information.

The course is advertised in the list of courses of the University of Glasgow International Summer School homepage:

With best wishes,
