Title: A more inclusive theory of numerals
Time and location: Tuesday 3/1, 14:30, LLCC Seminar Room

Abstract:  A more inclusive theory of numerals, joint work with Tue Trinh

We will present several observations on such sentences as “John read 2.5 Russian novels” and propose an analysis of numerals which accounts for them. For example, in the situation given in (i) we observe that sentence (a) is true and (b) false.

(i) {John read 2 Dostoyevsky novels and half of Anna Karenina. Mary read two Pushkin novels and half of War and Peace.}
a. John and Mary read 2.5 Russian novels each.
b. John and Mary read 5 Russian novels together.

Our analysis involves a degree function that associates objects with rational numbers by counting and measuring. We will discuss the ontological and linguistic consequences of our proposal in the context of generalizations such as the Universal Density of Measurement hypothesis of Fox&Hackl (2006).
