Deriving ‘de se’ from reflexivization

Winfried Lechner, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

The presentation explores the relationship between object language and meta language reflexivization. First, it will be argued that the core cases of Principle A of Binding Theory fall out from a system in which an object language reflexivization operator (self) applies to two place relations between individuals. These relations can, and sometimes have, to be derived by multiple covert movements, resulting in λ-abstraction. Second, it is proposed that de se readings are the result of applying a version of self to derived relations between attitudinal and res alternatives that are introduced by concept generators (Percus & Sauerland 2003). The same object language diagonalization operator will finally be seen to underlie the derivation of de se readings of reflexive subjects in ECM constructions (Moulton 2008).
