Between translated language and non-native productions
Dr. Noam Ordan
This work in progress reports results of predicting errors of Arabic native speakers in English. We first establish the connection between the language variety of translation and non-native productions. We then suggest a probabilistic model to predict errors in prepositions, focusing on an experiment where 45 college students translated 19 sentences from Arabic to English. The experiment quantifies their translation choices by estimating the probabilities of items in their L2 (or L3/L4) (English) given items in their L1 (Arabic).
The presentation is a joint work with Dr. Omaima Abboud and it builds on previous shared works with Moshe Koppel, Shuly Wintner, Ella Rabinovich and Sergiu Nisioi.
